As part of the Public Services course, pupils should experience two water based and two land based adventurous training activities. With this in mind, the School has organised a ‘Gorge Walking’ off-site activity on Monday 26th (class 11A) and Wednesday 28th September (class 11B) 2022. If your child has Public Services on their timetable every Monday they will attend this activity on Monday 26th September and if they have Public Services on a Wednesday they will attend this activity on Wednesday 28th September.
This will replace the Coasteering activity that was initially planned for this month. The Coasteering activity has been cancelled by the organisation due to staffing issues.
What is Gorge walking?
Gorge Walking is the best way to combine various activities, such as walking, climbing, swimming, trekking, bouldering, and jumping in a beautiful environment. Imagine navigating through deep cliffs at the side of a beautiful mountain, climbing up cascades and jumping into crystal clear deep mountain plunge pools – there is no better way of finding an outdoor adventure!
The activity will be run by Quest Adventures. You can find further information about the activity via the below website link https://www.quest-adventures.co.uk/
On the dates specified above, pupils will leave school at 8.45 am and return to school at 2 pm unless delays are encountered. The activity will take place in the Dinas rock area near Glyneath.
The cost of the trip is £30 per pupil. This will include 2.5 hours Gorge walking, the hire of a wetsuit, helmet, buoyancy aid and transport to and from the venue.
This is an exciting opportunity for our pupils to be outdoors exploring the beautiful rivers and gorges of Wales, to learn new skills and experience an adrenaline packed adventurous training activity. Water activities, like all sports and adventurous training activities, do have an element of risk. We can assure you however, that every care and precaution will be taken to minimise the risk of injury and that each pupil will have the necessary skills to handle what is asked of them.
Please could you complete the online form here and return the paper “Quest Adventure” consent forms sent home from school. Payment for the trip can be made via Squid by Friday 23rd September.
On the day of the activity pupils can come into school in casual clothing (tracksuit, bottoms, hoody, training shoes etc).
Pupils will also need footwear to wear during the activity. These need to be walking type shoes or training shoes (with a thick sole i.e. running type trainers). Pupils will not be able to take part in the activity if they have ‘flimsy’ trainers with thin soles such as converse type trainers. They also need to be laced so they are secure when climbing and in the water.
- Large towel
- A pair of old shorts to wear over their wet suites
- A pair of thick socks to wear during the activity for comfort and protection
- Swimming costume and optional base layers such as rash vests or lycra type tops to wear under their wetsuits.
- A packed lunch and a drink.
