September 2022 Return and Welcome

Date : Thursday 1st September 2022

Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope you and your family have enjoyed the school summer holidays, we have certainly been fortunate with some fine weather. Pupils return to school on Tuesday 6th September.

Firstly, a huge congratulations to the outgoing Year 11 pupils who achieved some outstanding GCSE and vocational results, after a challenging few years during the pandemic.
Secondly, we would like to extend a warm welcome to all our new Year 7 pupils. It would be remiss not to mention how well they started their time, at Pontarddulais, during their transition week in July.

A lot of work has been happening during the holidays that includes a new classroom, upgrading our heating system and improving the safety of our bus bay area. Please be mindful of the new crossing area if you drive your child to school. We are hopeful that work will start very soon on a 2G artificial pitch at the front of the school.

Please avoid booking family holidays during the school term; absences naturally impact adversely on pupils’ learning. Taking holidays during term time will only be authorised by the school in exceptional circumstances. Unfortunately, we have had occasions when holidays have been booked during the school term that have also clashed with GCSE exams; they cannot be re-arranged for another date.  In November, Year 11 pupils will be sitting GCSE Mathematics exams, and in May/June both Year 10 and Year 11 will be sitting GCSE exams.

Occasionally, we do find that a small number of pupils forget some of the basic school rules after the summer break. Some of the most common issues occur regarding the school’s uniform policy. To support with uniform, we have been selling second hand/recycled uniform over the summer holidays and will continue to do so until 3pm on Friday 2nd September. All items are priced at £1 that include: school jumpers, polo shirts, PE kit. This has been well attended, it is excellent value and there are still many more bargains available. If you would like to take advantage of this scheme then just call into school but please be mindful that you will not be able to park in the bus bays or car park due to ongoing work.

During the warm weather, at the end of last term, we did allow pupils to wear PE shorts, however, with the cooler weather forecast for next week the usual uniform policy shall return i.e. no shorts.

Some other points to note from the uniform policy where pupils occasionally transgress is jewellery. The only jewellery permitted is one pair of stud earrings to be worn in ear lobes.

More details can be found here:

Generally, pupils are very well presented on arrival at school, which means less time is spent on having to contact home or arrange detentions. If pupils arrive in school in incorrect uniform parents/carers may be contacted to bring the correct uniform to school. Supporting the school in these areas allows staff to support pupils more in their learning and wellbeing; in summary, everyone benefits. Your support in this matter is appreciated as it underpins the ethos, culture and standards in school.

Last year finished in fine weather and pupils enjoying end of year visits. The feedback we received from hosts at venues, such as Oakwood, was overwhelmingly positive. Pupils’ manners, kindness and maturity was commented on many times. I hope we can start this academic year on a similar positive note. We look forward to greeting your child back to school next week.

Mr. Gareth Rees
