Year 10 Assessment Information

1st April 2020

Dear Parent/Carer,

As you are aware, schools are currently closed to pupils and the external summer examinations for this academic year have been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We understand that there are many questions you may have about what happens next, including how your child will be graded this year. The most up to date information from Qualifications Wales and the WJEC is outlined below:

Qualifications Wales guidance on Year 10 learners (GCSE only)

Year 10 learners who were due to sit units that will lead to GCSE results next summer, will not receive a unit result. For those learners, there will be two options. They can choose to sit only the units they plan to take in summer 2021, with their overall GCSE grade calculated on the basis of that performance only. Alternatively, they can choose to sit the Year 10 units in summer 2021, along with Year 11 units. Whichever option a learner chooses, they will be awarded the best grade from either route.

Following guidance from Qualifications Wales, we have discussed the options for Year 10 pupils with key staff in school. When the school reopens, whenever that may be, our Year 10 pupils will have missed a significant amount of teaching and learning time. Therefore, we believe it would be best for our Year 10 pupils to focus on Year 11 work when learning from home. We do not want pupils learning topics that they may not be assessed on in the future. We do know that the pupils will be assessed on Year 11 topics during the 2021 summer examinations, so it makes far more sense to focus on this work.

Information and learning resources are available for a number of subjects including English, Science, Welsh, History and ICT. Year 10 pupils would have sat examinations in each of these subjects this summer. Staff within each of these areas have provided further guidance as to which topics pupils should be studying over the coming weeks or months. The learning materials can be accessed on our school website using this link:

As soon as we receive any further information regarding examinations for Year 10 pupils, we will update you. We wish to thank you for your patience and continued support during this unprecedented time.

Yours sincerely,

Mr. A. Owens

Deputy Headteacher
