Coronavirus Update

16th March 2020

Dear Parent/Carer,

As you will no doubt be aware, the Government announced last week that the UK has now moved from “containment” to “delay” phase of the response to the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak.

Potential school closures and the implications for pupils are part of ongoing discussions. However, at the current time schools should remain open to pupils and staff unless otherwise directed. As a school we are in close communication with the Local Authority, while monitoring Public Health Wales and Welsh Government guidance. We will keep parents and the wider community informed of relevant developments through the school’s website, Twitter account, Insight and text message system. Please contact the school if you require assistance setting up any of these forms of communication.

In preparation for potential school closure we have created a new part of our school website called ‘Pontarddulais Study Zone’. Study Zone will allow pupils to access learning resources online. The resources can be accessed using a PC, laptop, tablet device or mobile phone. The Moodle App can be downloaded using any electronic device. Study Zone can be accessed using the link on our school website or by using the following link: https://moodle.pontcomp.co.uk/

For Key Stage 4 pupils, Study Zone will support pupils in preparation for the forthcoming GCSE exams this summer. Resources such as past papers, mark schemes and self-marking quizzes are available for most subjects. Examination tips and guidance are also available for pupils and parents.

For Key Stage 3 pupils, online resources for literacy and numeracy are available through Study Zone. All pupils in Years 7-9 will sit Personalised Tests this summer for Reading and Numeracy. A range of past papers and mark schemes are available through Study Zone, which can be used in preparation for the forthcoming tests this summer. It is our intention to add extra resources that will be communicated via the pupils’ Hwb accounts and/or parents Insight, as required.

If the school does have to close due to the Coronavirus outbreak, pupils will be able to access home learning using Study Zone via the school website. If your child does not have access to an electronic device or the Internet please get in touch with the school so that we can make alternative arrangements to support your child.

Thank you for your continued support.

Yours sincerely,

Mr. A. Owens
Deputy Headteacher
